About this book
A cherished spaniel becomes a serious expense for a widow and her grandson in Mary Russell Mitford's short story. Mrs. King and young Tom support themselves with dairy produce, poultry, honey and the fruit and flowers Tom takes to market. Their cottage beside the Great Pond at Ashley End is rich in plants, but signs of decay hint at the household's shrinking means. Keeping Chloe adds a tax problem to their careful economy.
The narrator's father helps with the dispute, then faces Tom's offer to give him the dog. Affection and practical need pull against each other as the family considers the cost of keeping its pet near a landlord's sporting grounds. Detailed scenes of gardens, wooded lanes and cottage work place this small domestic difficulty within village life.
