About this book

Resemblances can mislead the eye and the conscience in Charles H. Spurgeon's discussion of faith. His opening comparisons between real jewels and imitations lead into an examination of outward religious practice and inward spiritual life. Published in 1887, the book draws on the account of Abraham's sons, Isaac and Ishmael, to explain the difference between human effort and divine promise. Spurgeon uses their births as the basis for a sustained argument about grace and the source of a believer's faith.

Later passages consider how biblical promises sustain people through poverty, illness, pain and the expectation of hardship. Remembered help and confidence in future relief become examples of their value in daily experience. Spurgeon urges believers to learn Scripture closely and connect its promises with particular needs. The direct address and familiar comparisons give these devotional reflections a preacher's voice. For readers interested in religious thought, the book offers a focused account of trust, spiritual renewal and the practical use of Scripture.
