About this book
Memories of Bethany by the Rev. John R. Macduff, D.D., was published in New York in 1861 and is inscribed to mourners in Zion, for whom Bethany has long been a name tied to sorrow. Near the start comes a list of passages in the sacred narrative that refer to Bethany, beginning with Luke X. 38-42.
One passage calls Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha and says that removing the eleventh chapter of St John from the Bible would be like blotting out the brightest planet. Another imagines words of reassurance spoken to a doubting listener, recalling a conversation about faith outside the village. A further passage speaks of disciples passing Gethsemane, Kedron and the Temple path, and of strength given for the day of trial.
