About this book

Church bells unsettle Mary Merton as she waits in her comfortable St. Louis home for her husband and daughter. Mary has given up her Catholic faith under John Merton's influence, while their daughter Ada attends a school run by sisters. When John proposes changing the child's education, Mary argues that Ada should be allowed to follow her own convictions. Their affectionate household becomes the setting for a disagreement over belief, parental authority and freedom of thought.

Francis J. Finn's 1896 story presents these tensions from an explicitly Catholic perspective. Ada prays for her parents and looks forward to her first Communion, carrying private worries beneath her cheerful manner. A later bedside scene brings her concern into direct conversation with her mother, joining religious conviction to ordinary tenderness. Readers interested in devotional fiction can find here a family story in which school, prayer and the relationship between mother and child give questions of faith their personal weight.
