About this book
On a wide western prairie, twenty-year-old Mariquita keeps house for her father and carries the religious habits of her convent schooling into daily life. Her private place of worship is a clump of trees, where she follows the Mass from a book and rings a sheep bell. John Ayscough sets this quiet routine against immense skies, distant homes and the watchfulness of a father who treats correction as his chief parental duty.
Two strangers arrive on horseback, and later conversations turn to her father's proposed marriage to Sarella, Catholic instruction and the permissions required by the Church. Mariquita's careful explanations reveal an understanding her father needs, even while he insists on his authority. The novel offers readers a close study of family manners and religious conscience, with the open landscape surrounding small, guarded exchanges of feeling.
