About this book
This 1891 edition of Adonais by Percy Bysshe Shelley names William Michael Rossetti beside Shelley on its title page. Its contents list a preface, memoirs of Shelley and of Keats, a section on the poem's composition and bibliography, an argument and a general exposition, a section on Bion and Moschus, the poem with its own preface, cancelled passages and notes.
The preface calls Adonais elevated in sentiment and classical in form, biographical in relation to Keats and in some minor degree autobiographical for Shelley himself. In the stanzas shown, Chatterton, Sidney and Lucan rise from their thrones, and one line reads that death is a low mist which cannot blot the brightness it may veil. A note mentions Shelley's own death on 8 July 1822, a little more than a year after he completed the elegy.
