About this book

Adrift on the Pacific, by Edward Sylvester Ellis, is a Story of the Sea and its Perils. Chapter I, Captain Strathmore’s Passenger, is set a few hours before the sailing of the steamer Polynesia from San Francisco to Japan, while Captain Strathmore stands on deck watching the bustle and hurry. A nervous, well-dressed gentleman leading a little girl by the hand asks Captain Strathmore to take a passenger to Tokio for him.

The purser comes aft with a parcel, places it upon the taffrail and speaks in a sepulchral voice, saying they are about to bury a day, since to-day is the Twentieth and to-morrow will be the Twenty-second. Inez asks, “How can we ever repay you for your kindness?” and the reply of Captain Fred is, “There’s no service on earth that I can render you which will compare with what you have done for me.”
