About this book
In Stromness on a bright May morning in 1843, whaling ships are preparing to sail while a schoolboy keeps fishing past the sound of the school bell. His account opens with the everyday freedoms and hazards of an Orkney childhood: small boats, cliff paths, school lessons and an older boy who uses his strength to bully younger companions. A desperate swim to save his dog, Selta, shows how quickly a game on the bay can become dangerous.
Robert Leighton's novel places this youthful rivalry within a busy seafaring community. Fishermen defend their loyalties, the Lydia needs new masts after a storm, and two captains receive a summons whose meaning they cannot explain. Local speech and detailed descriptions of the harbour give the story its particular character.
