About this book

Adventurers of the Far North, subtitled A Chronicle of the Frozen Seas, is credited to Stephen Leacock. The contents list chapters titled, among others, The Great Elizabethan Navigators, Hearne's Overland Journey to the Northern Ocean and The Memorable Exploits of Sir John Franklin. A company of adventurers, commonly called the Muscovy Company, sailed round the north of Norway and opened a connection with Russia by way of the White Sea. To find a passage and with it a ready access to Cathay and the Indies is described as one of the great ambitions of the Elizabethan age.

Five days after leaving the Great Slave Lake, canoes reach the region where the waters of the Great Bear Lake, then still unknown, drain into the Mackenzie. Peary sets out to reach the Pole by sledge, and the account gives April 6, 1909, as the day they reached the Pole and hoisted there the flag of the United States.
