About this book

A nervous visit to the bank turns an ordinary deposit into a comedy of embarrassment in Stephen Leacock's opening sketch. The narrator's solemn requests and awkward movements make a small transaction seem like a matter of immense consequence. Elsewhere, Lord Oxhead faces financial trouble amid family portraits and grand claims of ancestry, while his daughter brings news of an engagement. Published in 1910, this collection uses short stories and mock advice to expose the absurdity of everyday habits and social pretensions.

Leacock also turns railway travel and education into subjects for elaborate nonsense. His imaginary pocket manual reduces years of study to a handful of comically scrambled lessons in astronomy and history. Readers interested in verbal comedy will find exaggerated logic, confident misstatements and sudden changes of scale, all built around familiar encounters with institutions, manners and supposed expertise.

About the author

Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was a Canadian economist, political scientist, and, for a stretch of the early twentieth century, the most widely read humorist in the English-speaking world. He taught at McGill University in Montreal and published dozens of books, mixing gentle satire with real affection for the ordinary and the absurd.
