About this book
At fourteen, George T. Ulmer was determined to exchange farm work in Maine for a drummer's place in the Union army. His recollections begin earlier, with a New York newsboy's excitement over Fort Sumter, then follow the family move to a rocky farm and his repeated attempts to enter military service. Writing in a deliberately plain style, he presents his experiences as those of a young volunteer rather than a celebrated soldier.
Army life takes shape through hunger, errands, mischief and danger. Near Petersburg, Ulmer gathers apples for his company, carries supplies toward changing breastworks and spends a night loading a gun for his brother. These small episodes give the Civil War memoir its personal scale. Readers interested in soldiers' daily lives will find a candid account of youthful eagerness meeting the practical demands and distress of service.
