About this book

Writing as a former private in the First Tennessee Regiment, Samuel R. Watkins recalls the American Civil War through incidents from his own service. His 1882 memoir opens with a joking account of the division between North and South, then explains his wish to record the experiences of ordinary soldiers. The chapter headings trace campaigning through Shiloh, Corinth, Chickamauga, Atlanta and Tennessee, alongside camp duties, meals and encounters with civilians.

One episode centres on Watkins trying to repay an elderly woman for her hog. He fetches water, cuts wood and helps prepare dinner before explaining his part in the affair. A nearby account of target practice shows soldiers competing for a prized rifle. These small scenes give readers a view of military life shaped by personal memory, humour and the narrator's Confederate loyalties.
