About this book
Advice to Young Musicians, by Robert Schumann, appears in a translation by Henry Hugo Pierson. The advice says the cultivation of the Ear is of the greatest importance and tells the reader to play strictly in time. The advice tells the reader to find out the exact notes sounded by the bell, the glass, the cuckoo. The advice says to play easy pieces well and with elegance, which is better than to play difficult pieces badly. The advice also tells the reader to learn betimes the fundamental principles of Harmony.
The advice says that perhaps genius alone understands genius fully, and that there is no end of learning. The advice says of mute pianoforte-keyboards that you will discover they are useless, and adds that dumb people cannot teach us to speak.
