A cancelled holiday leaves a talkative New York husband with time to fill and a flat full of company. Card games grow into dancing, a downstairs neighbor complains, and his wife's early return sends the guests towards the elevator. Their next errand is to meet her cousin Alex, bringing family business into an already noisy household.
H. C. Witwer's comic novel begins with an argument that confidence can carry a man further than brains. That taste for bold statements runs through the husband's account of daily life, where dinner costs, telephone bills and visiting relatives all provoke elaborate complaints. Alex later steps into a marital quarrel and urges the couple to make peace. Slang, sporting comparisons and quick exchanges give these domestic scenes their pace.
