About this book

A visiting card found in a desk drawer sends Torchy and Vee to see newly married friends in New York. At Lucy Lee and Hamilton Blake's apartment, small rooms and a brief patch of afternoon sun invite Torchy's sharp comments. Behind the polite talk about convenience, Lucy Lee admits that city life has left her lonely. The scene gives Sewell Ford's comic novel an interest in how people make a home and meet their neighbors.

Family manners produce another dispute when Auntie visits for Richard's second birthday. She objects to the slang Torchy uses while playing with his son, and his attempt at a formal lesson quickly becomes another joke. These exchanges carry the book's conversational humor, with Torchy telling events in his own informal voice. Readers who enjoy domestic comedy and observations of New York life will find both in Torchy's account.
