About this book

A spring visit to a Boston home introduces Bartley Alexander through the eyes of Professor Lucius Wilson, an old acquaintance. Alexander has built great bridges, and his imposing presence matches his public reputation. Over tea, his wife Winifred asks Wilson about the young man he once knew, opening a gap between remembered promise and the successful engineer of the present.

Published in 1912, Willa Cather's psychological novel turns from the comfort of that household to Alexander's unsettled thoughts during an ocean crossing. Rain, rough water and changing skies accompany his wavering resolve, while a letter to Winifred links the voyage to his life at home. Readers interested in character studies will find close attention to memory, marriage and the feelings that persist beneath a confident outward manner.
