About this book
Allison Bain, with the subtitle "Or, By a Way She Knew Not", is a book by Margaret M. Robertson. A character named Mr Hadden stands at the open door of the manse, waiting patiently while his housekeeper adjusts his grey plaid for a long ride over the hills. The minister tells Barbara, "Think of poor Allison Bain on this sorrowful day."
Allison utters a glad cry and covers her face with her hands, and says, "you have lightened my heavy heart." A man comes to the manse that night with the intention of telling Allison all he had heard, but when he sees her sitting there so safe, he cannot do it. Mrs Esselmont smiles as she reads a letter that speaks of someone who is "not sure of herself, or of doing well the duties of a higher station".
