Amaryllis at the Fair

Richard Jefferies’s last novel trades plot for close, affectionate portraiture of a farming family scraping by on a Wiltshire smallholding. At its center is young Amaryllis Iden, quick-tempered and full of feeling, watching her gifted, improvident father coax beauty from the land while debts pile up and her mother frets over money. Drawn from the author’s own childhood home, the book lingers over ordinary things, an old house, a garden, the small frictions of relatives, and finds in them both tenderness and a clear-eyed sense of rural hardship.
