About this book
Amateur Fish Culture is by Charles Edward Walker. The preface says the aim of the book is to give information and hints which will prove useful to the amateur. Another point in the preface is that some of the plans and apparatus suggested would not be suitable for fish culture on a large scale, but the object is to confine the book entirely to operations on a small scale. The contents list chapters such as Stocking Waters with Food, Suitable Fish and Suitable Waters, and Trout. Preliminary Hints and Advice, among others.
The text says the rearing of trout is the most important branch of fish culture to the amateur. The text says it is absolutely necessary that the amateur fish culturist should live on the spot, or have some one who is intelligent and perfectly trustworthy who does. The author recounts finding a kingfisher under the net, flying up and down the pond trying to get out.
