About this book
An Introduction to the Study of Fishes identifies teeth as one of the most important elements in classification, with their arrangement and form referred to in accounts of families and genera. The discussion of hinged teeth explains that many fishes, especially predatory fishes with long, lancet-shaped teeth, have some or all teeth capable of bending inward. The account of Branchiostoma describes a spinal chord tapering at both ends, without an anterior cerebral swelling or anything approaching a brain.
The anatomical description of a broad, depressed head specifies a body depressed behind the head, becoming sub-cylindrical toward the tail and covered with ctenoid scales. The account of the lateral line identifies its openings as outlets of a muciferous duct continuing onto the head and branching into the jaw region.
