About this book
An American Diplomat in China identifies Paul S. Reinsch as American minister to China, giving the years of his service in that post. The narrator describes a first newspaper interview in China in which a reporter asks whether the American marines will be removed from the Chienmen Tower. The description of Shanghai includes private gardens behind high walls, flowering trees, afternoon tea at clubs, and the crowded life of streets and waterways.
The account of a procession describes modern uniforms, brass bands, evening dress, and diplomats’ varied uniforms alongside colour and brilliance preserved from an Imperial procession. The account of a protest says merchants would close their shops unless the Government dismissed three offenders, with teachers, students, and workers threatening strikes.
