About this book

China, Japan and the U.S.A is a work by John Dewey on present-day conditions in the Far East and their bearing on the Washington Conference. The introductory note says the articles are reprinted as they were written, with a few foot notes inserted where the text is likely to give rise to misapprehension. The contents list pieces headed Shantung, As Seen From Within, Hinterlands in China, Federalism in China and A Parting of the Ways for America.

The text says that even in normal times Japan relies more upon production for foreign markets than is regarded in most countries as safe policy. The writer doubts if New York has ever seen a demonstration which surpassed that of Canton in size, noise, color or spontaneity. The text says in effect that the republican revolution in China has still to be wrought out, and that the beginning of ten years ago has been arrested.

John Dewey

Dewey argued that a school teaching children to sit still and repeat is training them for a society that no longer exists, and that democracy is less a form of government than a way of living together that has to be practised daily. Democracy and Education is the fullest statement of it.
