About this book
Ordinary insects become classroom material in Leonard Haseman's guide for grade-school pupils and their teachers. Published in 1923, it connects basic insect study with the needs of agriculture, explaining how small creatures affect crops and how children can observe them close to home. The opening distinguishes insects from other creatures commonly called bugs and introduces their body structure, habits and development.
Much of the book turns explanation into practical observation. Pupils are encouraged to keep notebooks, make careful drawings and watch living specimens in jars or in the field. The chapters include grasshoppers, flies, mosquitoes, lady-beetles, bees and ants. A study of the cabbage butterfly follows the changes from caterpillar to chrysalis, while the apple-worm chapter connects an insect's life cycle with damage to fruit. For readers today, the book offers a concrete example of early school nature study built around patient looking and recorded evidence.
