About this book
Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects is a work by Charles V. Riley. The contents list names, among others, Characteristics of insects, Scope and importance of entomology, Classification of hexapods, and Order Hymenoptera. The text says it will be safe to estimate that not one-fifth of the species extant have yet been characterized or enumerated. A section headed Classification of Hexapods says seven orders of insects were originally recognized by Linnæus, namely, Neuroptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Aptera.
A first-person account describes preparing for work in the morning by getting out a pair of scissors, a pair of forceps, a drying-box containing setting-boards, a sheet of white paper, and some pins. The same account says those which have been taken out will be found to be all dead and in a beautifully relaxed condition for setting. A list of publications names, among others, Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Philadelphia and Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington.
