About this book
George Sharswood's essay is arranged as a preface, an introduction, the essay on professional ethics and three appendices. One passage turns to society itself: people are social beings, he writes, and society exists so that individuals may develop and be free, since a person alone would lose the fruit of his work to the stronger and the more cunning.
Another passage looks at how legal help was paid for in the past. It mentions a speech written for Nicocles, king of Cyprus, the Roman relation of patron and client, and the jurisconsults, who also received no compensation. A further passage notes that opinions of Blackstone's Commentaries differ widely, from enthusiastic admiration to the unsparing condemnation of Mr. Austin, who is named as Professor of General Jurisprudence in the University of London.
