About this book
This volume gathers essays by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Its contents include On Love, On a Future State, Speculations on Metaphysics, Speculations on Morals, an essay on the literature, the arts and the manners of the Athenians, a preface to Plato's Symposium, and the title piece, A Defence of Poetry.
The essay On Love begins with questions: What is love? Ask him who lives, what is life? In one passage Shelley says he cannot refuse assent to philosophers who hold that nothing exists but as it is perceived, and he calls materialism a system that appeals to young and superficial minds. Another passage sets the study of modern history, a study of kings, financiers, statesmen and priests, beside ancient Greece, whose history is that of legislators, philosophers and poets. A passage on poetry names Milton's Paradise Lost and the Orlando Furioso.
