About this book
Food and the resources needed to sustain a growing population shape T. R. Malthus's argument about social progress. Published in 1798, the essay began with a conversation about Godwin's writing and developed into a challenge to expectations of continuing improvement. Malthus frames his case through the disagreement between supporters of existing institutions and thinkers who believe society can approach perfection. He weighs hopeful theories against the pressures that people's needs place on available resources.
In an imagined community, the discussion turns to property, marriage and the obligation to support children. Malthus connects the division of land and the growth of families with unequal conditions, while examining the different blame assigned to women and men. This combination of political argument and practical concerns gives readers a way to study how he relates scarcity, family responsibility and social reform.
