About this book

Bertrand Russell begins with the individual life: political arrangements should give people room to develop their abilities and preserve their self-respect. In these five chapters from 1917, he sets creative activity against the desire to possess and control. Examples from teaching, art and science make his argument concrete, showing how authority can encourage growth or press everyone into the same pattern.

The discussion extends to capitalism, the wage system, socialism, personal liberty and relations between nations. Russell questions whether shifting wealth into state hands can improve society while power remains concentrated. His account of representative government also examines the distance between voters, legislators and officials, and the difficulty of protecting minorities whose concerns attract little public interest. Readers interested in political thought will find an argument for judging institutions by their effects on ordinary lives, with economic reform and freedom considered together.
