About this book
The Great Sea-serpent, by A. C. Oudemans, is an historical and critical treatise with the reports of 187 appearances, including those of the appendix, and the author's conclusions, with 82 illustrations. A section headed III. Would-be Sea-Serpents says it is by no means astonishing that in the vast waters of the ocean several objects, totally different from the animal generally known as the Great Sea-Serpent, gave rise to tales of that Great Unknown.
A quoted account says the speaker personally knew the three principal witnesses, Thomas Fotheringhame, George Sherar, and William Folsetter, to be men of excellent character, and of remarkable intelligence. The quoted account says a paper by Mr. Home maintains that the animal was nothing but a Basking shark. An entry dated 1882, May 28th, quotes a report that on arrival at Newcastle the reporter learned that some days before some fishermen of Lewis had observed the same or a similar animal. An entry for 1882, May 31, gives a report forwarded by Mr. Weisz, Captain of the Stettin Lloyd Steamer Kätie. The writer thinks most readers know a tunny, Thynnus thynnus, and gives a figure of it for those who do not.
