About this book
An Introduction to the Study of the Maya Hieroglyphs is by Sylvanus Griswold Morley and dated 1915. A letter of transmittal at the start calls the hieroglyphic writing of the Maya of Central America and southern Mexico probably the foremost intellectual achievement of pre-Columbian times in the New World.
One passage gives background on the Maya cities, saying that the southern cities sank into decay one by one while Chichen Itza, the first great city of the north, was founded and rose to prominence, and that Bakhalal, the first settlement in the north, was occupied for only 60 years. Another passage turns to dates: the day part and the month part of a date, such as 4 Ahau 8 Cumhu, and the glyphs known as the Supplementary Series that stand between them. Footnotes discuss details such as a sign found only at Copan.
