About this book

A broken fan found in an old trunk prompts Max Beerbohm to recall a seaside encounter and the literary ambitions of his nineteen-year-old self. In the opening essay, a woman's anger on a Normandy casino terrace becomes material for a story he hopes to write in the manner of Maupassant. The interest lies as much in the young observer's confidence as in the scene he witnesses.

Published in 1921, this collection gathers dated essays on books, conversation, hospitality, servants, walking and laughter. Beerbohm turns the meeting between an admired writer and an eager visitor into playful advice about timing an entrance, drawing on Coventry Patmore's recollection of Leigh Hunt. Personal memories sit beside observations of social manners and literary reputation. Readers interested in the familiar essay will find a voice that makes small objects and ordinary encounters occasions for amused reflection.
