About this book

A steamboat pilot's readings of Shakespeare keep breaking into shouted instructions about the river. Mark Twain recalls listening at the wheel under George Ealer, whose devotion to the playwright turns their watches into repeated arguments about authorship. Twain's account of changing sides brings a comic personal history into a literary dispute: conviction grows from the practical need to give an argumentative superior someone to oppose.

Published in 1909, this essay combines recollection, humor and discussion of the Baconian theory. The later excerpt turns to the precise use of legal language in the plays, quoting lawyers and commentators who treat that vocabulary as evidence of professional knowledge. Twain presents his position through anecdotes and accumulated testimony. Readers interested in literary controversy can follow both the argument itself and his account of how loyalty, habit and self-interest shape belief.
