About this book
William Morison's biography of Andrew Melville has chapters named in its contents on his birth, education and years abroad, his services to Scottish education, the principalships of Glasgow and St. Andrews, and the bishops, including his flight to England. A prefatory note dated March 1899 says that the quotations in Scots come from the autobiography and diary of James Melville.
Melville was born on 1 August 1545 at Baldovy near Montrose, the youngest of nine sons. Morison describes the district as sympathetic to the Reformed Faith and names George Wishart, John Erskine and John Knox. His father died at Pinkie when he was two, and after his mother's death in his twelfth year his eldest brother Richard took him to Maryton Manse. A passage in Scots has a speaker tell the King that there are two Kings in Scotland. Another passage reflects on growing old.
