About this book

Wartime nursing takes the foreground in George Barton’s account of Catholic sisterhoods during the American Civil War. Published in 1898, the volume gathers stories through interviews, archives and correspondence with officials, veterans and religious communities. Its chapters trace several nursing orders, including the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

Hospital life emerges through practical details: scant furnishings, difficult meals, housecleaning and the physical strain on the nurses. In the North Carolina episode, the Sisters care for patients whose religious beliefs often differ from their own, offer encouragement and write letters to families. The account also follows changes in leadership and the movement of patients from Beaufort to Newberne. Barton’s openly admiring perspective makes the book useful for exploring how religious service, personal testimony and civilian relief shaped the remembered experience of the war.
