About this book

A naval medical appointment in March 1864 begins John M. Batten's account of service during the American Civil War. He reports aboard the Princeton at Philadelphia, copies a surgeon's prized prescriptions and struggles to bring a small boat alongside the ship. Orders then send him toward Hampton Roads and the Valley City in North Carolina. These early scenes combine official paperwork with the practical adjustments and family farewells of a new officer.

Later passages follow the Valley City and other vessels on the Roanoke River, where underwater explosives and fire from the banks make progress dangerous. Batten describes damaged ships, protective measures and the anxiety of crews clearing the water ahead. Reproduced orders and a dated diary entry give the recollections a documentary texture. Readers interested in naval service can find both ordinary shipboard experiences and a participant's account of river operations.
