About this book

Henry S. Salt begins with a demand to extend ordinary ideas of justice to animals. His essay connects their treatment with the wider history of social reform, drawing on philosophers and earlier campaigners to explain why animal interests deserve moral and legal recognition. The 1922 revised edition places that argument beside changes in public attitudes and a century of legislation against cruelty.

Working horses, captive wild animals, food production, sport and the use of birds in fashion bring the discussion into everyday life. In the laboratory chapter, Salt challenges a view of living creatures as objects for investigation and stresses their individual character. His forceful prose makes this a useful read for anyone interested in the ethical arguments behind animal protection, or in how reformers connect personal habits with public responsibility.
