About this book
Honesty in ordinary dealings matters more to Samuel Smiles than fame, cleverness or a large fortune. In this 1871 book of moral reflection, he argues that conduct at home and at work reveals a person more clearly than public achievements do. A labourer supporting his family on a small income stands beside scholars and public figures as an example of practical wisdom. Quotations, remembered conversations and accounts of individual lives give concrete shape to discussions of duty, courage and restraint.
The chapters extend from family influence and companionship to work, temper, books, marriage and the lessons of experience. One passage follows George Wilson, whose commitment to teaching and scientific writing persists through serious illness, making duty a demanding daily practice rather than an abstract ideal. Christian references help frame his argument. Readers interested in nineteenth-century ideas of personal responsibility will find both advice about everyday behaviour and a record of the qualities Smiles believed society should value.
