The account of motion-pictures identifies a series of drawings or photographs representing progressive changes in an action, presented individually in rapid succession, among the elementary features of the apparatus. The mutoscope fastens picture leaves by one edge to an axis, making the leaves stand out like spokes. The mutoscope mechanism holds a leaf briefly before the eye and lets the leaf snap away to expose another picture.
The instructions for drawing an upward arm movement call for different degrees of flexure at the elbow and wrist from drawing to drawing. The artist is advised to try the action personally before depicting the movement, to understand the difference between a rigid arm and natural bending.
