About this book
The Bases of Design presents chapters whose substance, according to the preface, originally formed lectures addressed to students of the Manchester Municipal School of Art. The preface acknowledges an extensive field, with many branches only touched on and others treated in a very elementary manner. The opening discussion ranges from simple linear patterns and primitive bone scratchings to mural decoration of the Italian Renascence.
The account of Greece describes a mountainous, rocky country embracing the sea, with winds, seasonal changes, and an art that absorbed Asiatic elements. The discussion of crafts says that some still operate in a simple artistic and cooperative way, with little change in method since the Middle Ages.
