Anna of the Five Towns is Arnold Bennett’s first serious novel of the Potteries, published in 1902 and set among the smoke and chapels of industrial Staffordshire. Anna Tellwright is the quiet, dutiful daughter of a rich and pitiless miser, and when she comes of age and inherits a fortune she has never been allowed to touch, she must choose between the life her father and her chapel expect of her and the first stirrings of her own heart. About the Author
Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English novelist best known for realist fiction set in the Staffordshire Potteries, but also a writer of lively popular thrillers and ‘fantasias’ like this one.
