About this book
The title page reads Winterslow, Essays and Characters Written There, by William Hazlitt. The text says Coleridge seemed to take considerable notice of the writer, talked very familiarly, but agreeably, and glanced over a variety of subjects. The text reports a remark that Burke was a metaphysician and Mackintosh a mere logician, and that Burke was an orator (almost a poet) who reasoned in figures, because he had an eye for nature.
The text gives verse in which a nightingale answers with so mery a note that all the wood e rong. The text asks whether there is a Papist and a Protestant understanding, one prepared to receive the doctrine of transubstantiation and the other to reject it, and answers that in either case the ground of reason is pre-occupied by passion, habit, example.
