About this book

Henry-Russell Hitchcock's survey of nineteenth and twentieth century architecture is divided by period, with Part One covering 1800 to 1850 and Part Two 1850 to 1900. Its chapters include Romantic Classicism around 1800, the doctrine of J.-N.-L. Durand, Great Britain, the New World, the Picturesque and the Gothic Revival, building with iron and glass, and Second Empire Paris. The book was first published in 1958, with a second edition in 1963.

The text names architects and buildings one by one. It describes Mills's government buildings in Washington, among them the Treasury, the Patent Office and the old Post Office Department, and his granite custom houses in seaboard towns. Elsewhere it covers California architects such as the brothers Greene, Irving Gill and Bernard Maybeck, and Goodhue's Spanish Baroque buildings for the San Diego Exhibition of 1915. It also discusses Durand's designs for public monuments and for houses.
