About this book
The English Home from Charles I. to George IV. is a book on its architecture, decoration and garden design by J. Alfred Gotch. The title page says the book comes with upwards of 300 illustrations from photographs, drawings, and engravings.
The text says Chinese papers were introduced, and that these papers consisted of rolls, each printed with a portion of a large design, which required some five or six pieces to complete it. The text says Lady Mary Wortley Montague, most celebrated of blue stockings, wrote to her daughter from Louvere, in 1749, that she had heard the fame of paper hangings, and had some thoughts of sending for a suite, but was informed that they were as dear as damask is here. The text says it was quite a usual custom to adhere to the old ways in the general design of a house, but to treat some special feature, such as a doorway, in the more modern and correct fashion.
