About this book
Writing in 1913, E. Walter Maunder asks what physical conditions would allow intelligent life to survive on another world. He begins by defining an inhabited planet as a place capable of supporting conscious beings with material bodies, then turns to the needs of living organisms. His discussion treats the problem as a matter for physical investigation, using the life we know on Earth as a basis for comparing conditions elsewhere.
The chapters range across the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, the asteroids and the major planets. Mars receives particular attention, including its reported canals, its atmosphere and the effect of distance from the Sun on surface temperature. Maunder uses comparisons between earthly climates to make his reasoning more accessible. Readers interested in the history of astronomy can follow an early twentieth-century attempt to test claims about other worlds against the available evidence.
