About this book
Through the telescope, Percival Lowell treats Mars as a world whose changing surface can be studied in detail. His 1906 account brings together observations gathered over repeated approaches of the planet to Earth, with chapters on polar caps, climate, colored regions and the markings he calls canals. The preface explains his aim of making scientific research understandable to a general reader, and the opening connects planetary observation with the impulse to explore unfamiliar places.
Lowell also sets out to defend his interpretation of what he sees. In discussing double canals, he examines the effects of an eye being out of focus and compares these optical explanations with telescopic observations. Maps and illustrations accompany the broader discussion of seasonal change and water.
