About this book
Argentina by W. A. Hirst presents a sketch of the land and people that the preface hopes, however inadequate, will encourage closer knowledge of the country. The account describes maize raised beside the Paraná and mainly exported from Rosario, alongside cattle, sheep, ripening corn, and flourishing fruit orchards. The extension of railways is said to have greatly destroyed or modified the old free life upon the pampas.
Estancias outside remote districts are often described as large establishments offering comforts and some luxuries rather than the walled semi-fortresses of earlier times. The Gaucho is described as a horseman and stock-rider whose part in the country's development includes the creation of the cattle industry before the Revolution.
