About this book

George Grote's study of Aristotle is edited by Alexander Bain and G. Croom Robertson. This is the second edition, with additions, dated London, 1880. The notice says it is an exact reprint of the first edition, with the addition of two essays on the Ethics and Politics of Aristotle, found among the author's posthumous papers.

The text is crowded with notes. In the pages sampled, Greek passages from Aristotle sit beside Latin lines from Cicero, and notes discuss what Dionysius of Halicarnassus said about Isokrates, including whether Isokrates wrote judicial speeches at all. Other notes cite the Analytics and give a Greek line about geometers and the lines they draw, with Themistius quoted on the point. References to Aristotle's works appear in the footnotes throughout.
