About this book
Artificial Light: Its Influence upon Civilization is by Matthew Luckiesh. The book describes a new profession, the lighting expert, who is studying the problems of producing and utilizing artificial illumination. One chapter, THE ART OF MAKING FIRE, begins by noting that various stages of civilization are to be found scattered over the earth at the present time.
A discussion of the arc says that Beck directed a stream of alcohol vapor at the arc so that the carbons were kept from oxidizing. The author argues that the symphony of light cannot be justly condemned for a lack of appreciation and understanding of it, since it has not been introduced to the public.
