About this book
Edward G. D. Liveing gives An Infantry Subaltern's Impression of July 1st, 1916. The introduction names the attack on the fortified village of Gommecourt as what Mr. Liveing describes. The dedication is to the N.C.O.s and men of No. 5 Platoon, whom the writer says he had the good fortune to command in France during 1915-1916.
One passage describes woodland and orchards round Hébuterne village, which it says is now deserted, save for a few cats. The speaker says he felt as if he was in a dream while advancing, but had all his wits about him. In the speaker's words, everything stood still for a second, as a panorama painted with three colours: the white of the smoke, the red of the shrapnel and blood, the green of the grass.
