Audrey is a 1902 historical novel by Mary Johnston (1870-1936), the Virginia novelist whose colonial romances were among the best-selling American fiction of the early twentieth century. Set in colonial Virginia in the early eighteenth century, the novel follows Audrey, an orphaned mountain girl raised as the ward of a parish minister, through her tragic love for the aristocratic Marmaduke Haward of Fair View plantation, against a canvas of tidewater society, the playhouse, and the wild upcountry. Johnston wrote Audrey after the enormous success of To Have and To Hold, and the book confirmed her command of the colonial Virginia material she made her own. Johnston was also a leading suffragist of the South. The novel was filmed in 1916. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
